This title is in a really nice poem that I like.
And then you realize that the return ticket you were clutching onto,
just in case,
will take you back to a place now too narrow to fit you in any longer,
(those damn wings…)
We went to Belgium. And Germany and Poland and, briefly, the Netherlands. Travel is wonderful, guys. This summer has been wonderful. It was truly a summer of soaking up experience and soaking up love.
Our time in Belgium was spent alongside our 30 teammates, prepping for and competing at the 2013 European Open. Aha. Such an experience. Opening ceremonies filled me with love as they raised the flag and played music. It followed me through the weekend, gradually feathering my sides with each up… and each down.
We E’d two runs at this event, had a bar in one, and took fifth in another. Our fifth place was in Team Jumping; definitely our highlight as far as results go. The bar was caused by the same handling error that incurred the off courses in the other two rounds. Or a very similar error, indeed. Rev says she would like to go very fast now. Keep up, please.
No finals for us on Sunday meant cheerleader status for me and lots and lots of walks for Rev (okay and I had lots of french fries and ice cream too… cut me some slack, I don’t like beer!). The USA had a medium dog team in team finals and several of each height in individual finals. Strong efforts from all of the competitors, many clean runs, and even a silver medal won by Rosanne and Strafe!! Now that is how you close out an event. It is such a thrill to cheer on a win from your own country.
We have some homework. Some very specific homework. Rev is technically on an agility break, but while we break from equipment and coursework we are working a few critical pieces of foundation. Several weeks from now I have some organized training lined up, plus a plethora of AKC trials to work towards finishing our Nationals qualifications, and then Cynosport.
I was proud of many moments over our weekend at the European Open, and in awe of the opportunities and adventures we experienced over our two weeks in Europe. Oh yes, the EO was only the beginning.
The Monday following competition we traveled to Poland with some new friends who had also been competing that weekend. Ten hours in a car, some pyrshep puppies, a bit of sightseeing, and a ten hour train ride later, we arrived in Białystok.
Rev and Torfil think trains are excellent.
Torfil and Zuza invited us to Poland about a year ago, and boy was it a blast. We went all over. Nonstop. Nonstop moving, visiting, sightseeing, eating… attempting to decipher each other’s sentences was an adventure all its own, though the majority of the time it was a struggle of accents, not a true language barrier. Zuza’s good.
I love that we keep finding such grand people everywhere we go. I love that we get to adventure with them. How insane… how lovely.
I do hope Zuza comes to visit us in the states one day.
As soon as we got back from Europe we went into a week long beach vacation with family. Jumped straight in. I love the switch back; I was waking up at 5 in the morning pumped to take on the day. Although with such active days that week, it wasn’t long before I was fighting to wake up by 8…
We surfed during those days. I am in love with surfing, though I lack the talent. I struggle. Not simply with skill, I struggle with trust. In this way the ocean and her depths echo my earthbound life… oh, trust. Get back on the board. Keep surfing. Trust the wave, trust your board, trust yourself.
I fall a lot. That board beats me up a lot. But I stand up, too, and I feel like I can fly.
Like I can FLY. So even though I’ll fall down 8 more times before I even have a shot at standing again… I get back on the board, cringe a little, and breathe.
Hmm. Revelations in the salt.
Back at school this week, with a bike!! Her name is Charm, Charm the Firebolt. Off of facebook. Drop/add so we’ll see what classes I end up with by the end of the first week. I’m a fan of bartering when it comes to school schedules for whatever reason. Keeps things exciting. Rev is up here with me, in a house, with two excellent roommates and another agility dog.
